Do you ever go to the grocery store with a specific purpose only to find yourself trying free wine samples instead? This always happens to me – I mean…I always try really hard to avoid it (yeah right), but they just suck me in every time.
We walked into HEB this past weekend with the intention of grabbing our salmon dinner and leaving. However, they like to hand out free wine samples right where the seafood is…..so…..yeah. That trip to the grocery store took a bit longer than expected, and I walked out with 2 more wine bottles. You only live once, right?
Anyways, I wanted to tell y’all about the two bottles we bought because I really like them! I think you would like them too. I thought this post would be good timing for the holidays – if you are stuck on what to get for Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate), try one of these!
- Juan Gil Jumilla Red Blend: I wanted to talk a little bit about this one since it is from Spain. I actually don’t venture out much with wines – I typically stick to Napa and Sonoma wines. When I tasted this one in the store, I was surprised how much I liked it! I would say it is a great every day wine. It isn’t anything fancy, but it is smooth and very drinkable. The tannins are not very dominant in this wine, so if you are just getting into red wines, give this one a try. It is approachable and has hints of red berry and plum.
- Farm Collective Napa Proprietary Red Blend: This one was my favorite wine I tried in the store (we tried 5 total!). It was definitely bold and more flavorful than the Spanish wine, which is why I probably liked it more. Although it was bold, I thought it was very smooth. Extremely smooth. It is only 50% Cabernet, so it isn’t going to be as big or dry as some Cabs. Overall, it is a solid choice. I love finding red blends like this, and I will definitely be buying it again.
- It is about $38 for an average price – I think that is a deal for this wine. I would have guessed the price to be at least $50 for a bottle this good.
- This would make a great Christmas wine for your dinner table if you are looking to spend a little more without completely breaking the bank!
Writing about these wines makes me want to open a bottle now! I hope you will give one of these a try. Let me know what you think after you try them. I would love to hear your thoughts because everybody has a different opinion on wine
What are some other good wines you have found at the grocery store lately? I love experimenting and trying new things.
Cheers!
