It’s been a long time coming, but I’m finally ready to reveal our “completed” wine room! I say completed in quotes because…is anything ever really complete in your house? We still have a few minor things we need to take care of, but it is basically 90% or more done.
I pulled the previous homeowner’s photos from Zillow so I could show everyone what a dramatic difference this is. It doesn’t look anything like the original room!
I think the paint color alone makes a huge difference! Do you agree? It’s crazy to think about the transformation this room went through. I honestly couldn’t have imagined doing anything else with this space. It’s the perfect size for a wine room!
In terms of wall decor, we decided to include four big maps of different wine regions throughout the world. Of course, we had to include our two favorites: Napa and Sonoma! I have links to all of the product sources below, so scroll down to the bottom of the post if you want to know where something is from.
Of course, any wine room needs to have books about wine! We love learning about different grape varietals and where the wine is from. We will never know everything there is to know about wine, but we can certainly try. Who knows…..maybe we’ll be certified sommeliers someday?
If you are wanting to learn more about wine and don’t know where to start, I would highly recommend Wine Folly. We purchased this book several months ago, and I can already say that I’ve learned so much. It would also make a great host/hostess gift if you have a wine loving friend!
The Grivna Vineyard sign was a wedding gift from when we got married in 2014. It looks like the top of a wine barrel, and it’s one of my favorite decor pieces in the wine room. It kind of feels like we have our very own winery or tasting room!
One of the things I love about this room is the handmade coffee table. If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you know that we love our DIY projects. While we didn’t DIY the entire room, we definitely wanted to have something in the room that we built ourselves. I think it fits in quite nicely with the rest of the interiors.
We were able to display several of our wooden wine boxes on the shelves, and I think that adds a nice touch. I’ve always wanted to showcase those somewhere in our house. I’m also obsessed with our Napa Valley pillow that we have in this room! Now I’m just waiting for someone to buy me the Sonoma County pillow….
We’ve been collecting marble coasters from each winery we’ve visited over the last several years. Most wineries have these for sale in their tasting rooms, so it’s a fun way to keep track of which wineries we’ve been to. I’m pretty sure we have over a hundred coasters, but it’s nice to have a little memory from each winery we’ve visited.
What’s Next?
Even though the room is mostly finished, there are still a couple of changes we want to make.
- We want to get rid of the blinds and put shutters on all of the windows. We will get shutters for both the top and bottom windows since we get a lot of afternoon sun.
- We need to put something on the blank wall, opposite the windows. We don’t have anything on that wall yet, and it looks a little too blank. If you have any ideas or suggestions, send them my way!
- I haven’t officially decided on this yet, but I’m thinking a rug might look good in this room. The room is pretty clean and sleek looking, so I think the rug could add some dimension to the room.

Common Questions
- How long did this project take?
- It took about a month to have most of the wine room complete. The built-in cabinets only took a couple days to install, so that part moved really fast. Due to work and other commitments, it took us a little longer to paint the cabinets, build the table and get artwork on the walls.
- Did you use a general contractor?
- No. We were quoted over $12,000, so we decided against that option. It was pretty easy to hire people on our own. If you’re organized and don’t mind keeping track of a few things, you are better off not using a general contractor. It will save you tons of money if you can find your own carpenter, electrician, etc.
- How much was it to get built-in/custom cabinets?
- We paid about $5,000 for the cabinets to be built. I thought the price was fair, and the work was very professional. Also, the cabinets were completed in less than two weeks time. On time and on budget….just the way I like it!
- What was this room before it was a wine room?
- We weren’t using this room for anything, but the previous owners had it set-up like an office. It is located on the first floor, so most people probably would have used it as an office or study.
Overall, I’m really pleased with this room and the way it turned out. I’m so happy that we will have a spot to relax and enjoy wine with friends. We’ve collected an abundance of wine over the last few years, so it’s nice to have a dedicated space for all these amazing bottles. I can’t wait to make memories in this room and taste wines from all around the world. My ultimate goal is to use this room for both educational purposes and (most importantly) for fun.
What do y’all think of the wine room? I’d love to hear from you, especially if you have any feedback on what we should add to the empty wall! I don’t want to clutter the room, but I think it might need a little more dimension.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post and as always, cheers!
