Today on the blog, I am starting a new series called “Blogging 101.” I am starting this series so I can provide resources and tips to people who are interested in starting a blog. I have been getting a few questions from folks on how to get started with blogging, so I am hoping that this series of posts will help answer to those questions!
First up, I want to talk about which cameras I use for blogging. I do use a combination of DSLR and phone cameras because sometimes, it is easier to use one over the other. When traveling, it is always going to be easier to use the phone camera, but I do want to get better about using my DSLR on our trips. In general, using a DSLR is going to provide you with higher quality images that are more clean and structured. If you really want to up your blogging game, I would recommend investing in a DSLR camera.
- Canon EOS Rebel T6i DSLR
- I purchased this camera shortly after starting my blog because I wanted something that could capture clean, crisp photos. I did have an older Sony DSLR camera before the Canon, but I knew I wanted something newer with more lens options.
- I switch back and forth between the standard 18-55mm lens and the f1.4 aperture lens. The f1.4 lens is great for capturing portraits and blurring out the background. I would highly suggest this camera if you want to get more serious about blogging. It really does take amazing pictures, and I am planning to start using this more when traveling.
- Below is a sample image from the Canon Rebel T6i camera. This was taken using the 18-55mm standard lens (f/3.5-5.6) in manual mode.
- Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II
- I recently purchased this camera for vlogging purposes. This is much more compact than the Rebel T6i, so it is easier to use for video while you’re on the move. The quality is great and the camera is small enough to fit in someone’s pocket.
- I used this camera for the Sonoma Vlog, and I can’t wait to use it again for more travel vlogs. Overall, this camera is pretty user-friendly and doesn’t require much training. I watched a few tutorials on YouTube and most of the settings are pretty straightforward. This camera would be a great option for beginners. It isn’t overwhelming and you could take it just about anywhere.
- Google Pixel 2 Phone Camera
- Believe it or not, I love using my phone camera for photos. I would say I use this for the vast majority of my pictures that end up in my Instagram feed. When we are traveling, it is so much easier to pull out a phone instead of a huge camera.
- Below is a sample picture from my phone! We took this photo while in Vegas this past week. There was very minimal editing needed for this photo.
- Galaxy S8+ Phone Camera
- This is Alex’s phone, and we probably use his phone camera just as much as mine. I think his phone takes really nice photos outside. It does a great job of capturing the color in photos and the lighting always looks great in the outdoor photos.

Overall, I don’t have a hard and fast rule of when I use one camera over another. Right now, I am using our phones for the vast majority of photos, but like I said, I plan to switch over to using the DSLR more frequently. The Canon Mark II camera will most likely be used exclusively for vlogging, but I do want to see if it can take good photos as well.
What is your camera of choice? Do you mainly use your phone or do you like using a fancy DSLR camera instead? I’d love to hear what works for you!
